About this event

  • 3 days 3 hours

Love Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Galaga and can't play them anymore? Have you ever wanted to create your own video game? Well here's your chance. We will walk you through the entire process of creating your very own tabletop arcade machine. You do not need to be a wood worker in order to participate. This workshop is perfect for the do-it-yourselfer, or the family that would like to do a project together. Ticket is per arcade machine, not participant. Each ticket can have up to 3 family members join.

You'll start with a sheet of plywood that will be cut into the appropriate shapes (arcade cabinet). You'll sand, paint or stain each piece for a smooth finish. We'll explain the wiring and how the jamma board connect and you'll wire the entire inside of the cabinet from the speakers, power supply, and monitor. Please note that we will be using used monitors and power supplies (thus the affordability of the workshop) but you will have put the entire thing together, so you will know/understand how to change them out if/when they need to be replaced. However the wiring, buttons, joysticks, jamma board and other parts will all be brand new.

This workshop will last for four days. Each day for three hours until the cabinet is completed (extra half hour for clean up, etc). The week before the workshop, you'll be able to prep your cabinet. The wood will be already cut, however, you'll be able to sand, stain or paint the wood so you'll just have to "touch it up" at the end of the workshop. Additional vinyl is included in the workshop, and we will be discuss how to print your artwork and adhere it at home (so it doesn't get damaged in transit).

A detailed email will specifics will be emailed to each registered participant spelling out details for the workshop. You should be available one (or two) nights of the prior week and the entire week of the actual camp (although sometimes, we finish early depending on the eagerness of the participants). This is a process to build and you'll need to be here each night.

Feel free to stop by the Lab and play the game for yourself during open lab times. The actual machine is located right outside the Fab Lab entrance.

No prior woodworking or software knowledge is required to participant in this camp.

By purchasing a ticket, you consent to following all the rules related to the Fab Lab and any others to maintain safety for all participants within the lab.
